Membership
We are always looking for new members to get involved with our organization. If you know someone who is interested come down to the Post to sign up. To be eligible you need only to be a Veteran of certain periods that are defined on the application. To be a member of the Sons of the American Legion you need to be male and be a son or a grandson of an eligible Veteran. The same goes for ladies membership in the Auxiliary.... We are in need of new members to help support our programs, and enjoy the many fun events that we have going on at our Post.
Our membership goal for 2012 has been set at 265 members. This is a big goal for this small community and surrounding area communities. As of 1/18/12, we are at 224 members or 84.53% and we have every confidence of meeting our goal. If you are a current member and have not yet renewed your membership, please do so soon. If you are an eligible Veteran who is considering joining our Post, please come on down and sigh up. We welcome you !
Iraq & Afghanistan Veterans: "WELCOME HOME" We sincerely appreciate your service to our Country. Please come down to the Club or to an American Legion meeting so we can thank you in person.
Veterans Benefits
Our Service Officers are always ready to assist our Veterans. If your having a problem with a claim, or in need of assistance in placing a claim to the VA, talk with Gary Roach or Jim Mach and they will get things rolling for you or get you in touch with someone who can help you. There are also Veteran assistance programs for those Veterans in need.
Flag retirement Bin
We now have a metal "old and weary" flag collection bin. People who wish to retire their flag can just drop them off into this bin. The members of the Post have a Flag Retirement Ceremony every few months to retire each and every flag with honor and dignity. If you know of someone that is flying an old worn/torn flag, let them know that there is a way to dispose of it with dignity.
YOUTH PROGRAMS
Post 54 is proud to be sponsoring a AAA American Legion baseball team! Please show your support because this is a big deal and the first of its kind in our community. The 49ers now have a web site located at 49ers baseball. This site includes their schedule and your support for the team would be great!!
Don't forget that Post 54 also sponsors an Americal Legion AA baseball team that equally deserves our support. They play great baseball too!
For those of you who are not familiar with this long-time American Legion program, it's purpose is to educate high school age young people about State Government and how it works. They actually get to go through the election process, get elected to vaious posts and work to enact legislation, etc. Through this process they get detailed, hands-on knowledge about what our state government is all about.
We are looking for donations for sending boys to EBS on an every-year basis. If you or an organization you know has an interest in sponsoring one of these young men contact Gary 936-1523. The cost is $375.00 and if you are not aware of how great a program it is, look up the web site through the link at walegion.org.
We sincerely hope that this program attracts many more local students and we look forward to wider participation in the future. We will continue working closely with local high schools promoting this program.
This new Youth activity is just in the planning stages at our Post. Gary Roach and Steve Warren have a hold of the reins and are moving forward with this program. If you have a child 18 years old or younger who is interested in learning to shoot competetively while learning and practicing gun safety, please contact Gary or Steve through the American Legion Post 54 for further information
.
Post 54 recognizes the importance of education. For that reason, Post 54 gives scholarships to worthy local high school students to assist with their College expenses.
IN THE CLUB
Come down and see our new look!! A great big thanks to all of you who helped us clean up, paint, and remodel the Club. It looks and feels great and it couldn't be done without the efforts of our volunteers. The carpet is in and the dance floor has been refinished, chairs have been recovered and table seating has been updated. We will continue to improve/increase our display of veteran memorabilia. Steve Warren and Gary Roach have built several shadow boxes that are now the home for uniforms from all the great wars and there are plans for building more of these this coming winter. If you have any past war uniforms or memorabilia please call 509-936-1523. We are still in need of a marine corp uniform.
