TREATS FOR TROOPS

American Legion post 54, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2047, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion Squadron have started a program to send our men and women serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan the normal items which they do not have access to in post exchanges in other foreign countries. These items include any microwaveable foods and treats, such as popcorn and soups, vacuum packed jerky and pepperoni, candies, such as Jolly Ranchers, etc, that do not contain chocolate (except M&M's). Other items that are needed are Carmax and pre-moistened wipes.

Donations can be made at the American Legion Club by anyone in the surrounding communities. There is also a donation jar to help cover mailing and postage expenses. If you have any relatives serving in combat areas, please bring their name and address to the Post so they can be included in the distribution of these collected items.

All veterans, their wives, sons and daughters, members of the community and business people thank you for making this endeavor a success.

From the President of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary: To All Aux members - The American Legion Auxiliary will meet on Mon. Sept. 11th at 7:00PM to begin a new period of activities. We are a patriotic service organization whose aims and purposes are to assist our veterans and their families, and other civic organizations, local & national. Active members are needed more than ever. Show your support for our veterans & active service personnel. Questions or transportation call 935-6860.

Few people realize that: The Auxiliary and the Legion are often centers for community and civic activities in mid-America, and provide a focal point for citizens' involvement. The Auxiliary raises more than $18 million every year and reinvests those funds in VA medical centers and community programs. Thousands of hours are devoted to crime prevention programs, instructing children, the elderly and the general public on safety, crime prevention and protection within the community. Auxiliary volunteers are the backbone of assistance in the 171 VA Medical Centers. They not only provide diversion and entertainment for patients, but assist the hospital staff in physical and psychological therapy, clerical and many other duties that would otherwise cost American taxpayers millions of dollars. The Auxiliary deals with issues such as drug and alcohol abuse, missing and abused children, teen suicide and teen pregnancy. Its services touch the lives of all Americans directly or indirectly. More than 20 nationwide programs receive support and financial aid from the American Legion Auxiliary.

Poppy: The Poppy Program is the oldest and most widely recognized Auxiliary program. Each year around Memorial Day, Auxiliary volunteers distribute millions of bright red crepe paper poppies in exchange for contributions to assist disabled and hospitalized veterans. The program provides multiple benefits to the veterans and to the community. The hospitalized veterans who make the flowers are able to earn a small wage, which helps to supplement their incomes and makes them feel more self-sufficient. The physical and mental activity provides many therapeutic benefits as well. Donations are used exclusively to assist and support veterans and their families. The poppy also reminds the community of the past sacrifices and continuing needs of our veterans. Auxiliary members endeavor to explain the true meaning of this little flower to all those who receive it. The poppy has become a nationally known and recognized symbol of sacrifice and is worn and used by Auxiliary members to honor the men and women who served and died for their country in all wars.
