From the President of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary:

To All Auxillary members: The American Legion Auxillary Unit 54 has numerous activities throughout the year which benefit our community and local area. Many of which are very easy to contribute toward! A couple examples are, the collection of Box Tops and Campbell Soup labels for Gess Elementary School. If you have any of these sitting aroung your home, please bring them to the Post and we'll make sure they get to the school. Pop can tabs are another easy thing to collect. These are given to the Ronald McDonald House in Spokane or Transplant Lodge at the Vancouver, WA VA.

The American Legion Auxillary has 3 central programs that we contribute to: Veteran/Military Support and Advocacy, Youth Development and Family Support as well as Americanism and Community Service.

VETERAN/MILITARY SUPPORT and ADVOCACY: Each Memorial Day our Auxillary members distribute Poppies at the local Safeway store for donations. These funds are used only for Veterans projects which include our donations to the Veterans Christmas Gift Shop where Veterans can go to purchase items to be wrapped for their family members. Also, the Veterans Gift sacks that we put together at Christmas time to be distribted to the local single or widowed Veterans.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT: Girls State is one program that we sponsor to area high school Juniors. It is an opportunity for them to spend a week at Western Washington University learning how our government works. Our Uint has adopted Lakeland Village as one of our Children and Youth support programs. Lakeland is located in Medical Lake with house cottages that provide housing for special-needs clients. We collect card fronts and they use them to create cards to send to their families or to sell in their gift shop. We collect small items to send to them throughout the year, and at Christmas, instead of a gift exchange, we send gift items to them.

FAMILY SUPPORT: Our Auxillary Unit privide Flag etiqeutte magazines which are distributed to local school. We sponsor a Poppy Poster contest at Gess Elementary. We host a dinner for the Children's Miracle Network in the spring with all of the funds staying local. In February, we collect baby items for Operation Stork. Items collected are sent to Fairchild Air Force Base for the families with newborn babies.

This is a quick snapshot of some of our main programs that we have made our own- - - throughout the year. But we do much more! We donate to many Veteran Relief Funds and do our best to provide help when is it needed. Our menbers are active in the community and it only takes a small amount of time to give back to our Veterans and their families who have given to us so much. Anyone is welcome to join us at a meeting.....we'd love to see some new faces.............Elaine Roach

Our Auxillary has an ongoing project of collecting items for our deployed troops around the world especially in war zones and to our other needy Veterans. The following is a list of items that are suggested by the Department of Washington Auxiliary for Veterans and Troops. The items on this list are basic items that we all have at our fingertips every day.....items that we all take for granted. Yet to our deployed heroes and needy Veterans, these are "special".
